Signs of a Roof Leak

Signs of a Roof Leak

Missing shingles, granules filling the gutters, water stains after rain—they all point to roofing problems. Pay attention to these warning signs and act before the problem gets worse and more expensive to fix.

Sign #1: Algae and Mold

Occurs most often in warm climates and can be caused by growth of airborne fungi or algae storage on the roof.

Sign #2: Buckling Shingles

This may be caused by improperly applied felt or by movement in the deck of the roof.

Sign #3: Curling Shingles

Curling Shingles may be caused by water absorption or by hot air in the attic.

Sign #4: Damaged Flashing

Caused by improper installation (on new roof) and also by drying and cracking (on old roof).

Sign #5: Roof Rot

This problem can be caused by absorption of moisture in the mat.

Sign #6: Roof Spots

Leaks may appear around chimneys or vents and even ‘travel’ down rafters and show up away from the original source.
